French Polynesia’s scenic vistas delight visitors from all over the world. InterContinental Tahiti has been designed to make the most of the natural beauty that surrounds the five-star resort, offering guests panoramic views from every possible vantage point. One of the loveliest views in the tropical resort is from the elegant beachside restaurant, where guests dine just a stretch of white sand from the ever-changing blue of the South Pacific, the peaks of Moorea gracing the horizon.
Shade7 outfitted the restaurant with two different models of cantilever umbrellas. The most useful feature of a cantilever umbrella is that the open canopy cantilevers out from the mast, with the mast always outside the canopy space. This creates the fantastic benefit of the entire space under the canopy being free for use, like an open-air room. Cantilever umbrellas are perfect for restaurants, where friends and family can share a meal and enjoy each other’s company without having to peer around an umbrella pole. Shade7’s cantilever umbrellas can be bolted directly to concrete patio or reinforced deck, or set into lawns and gardens, which gives the umbrella its full wind-rating along with the added benefit of not impacting foot-traffic or cluttering foot space beneath tables.
Around the edges of the wooden decking is the Riviera Premium, Shade7’s strongest and most beautiful Riviera cantilever to date. Available in matte silver or matte black, with forty four colours available for commercial clients, the InterContinental Tahiti chose matte black frames with Linen canopies in the 3.5 octagonal size. The 3.5 octagonal carries the highest wind-rating in the cantilever range of 60kph, and has a high ground-clearance of 1.1m distance from the closed umbrella frame to the ground. This allows plenty of room for the umbrellas to be easily closed and covered without the need to move tables and chairs.
The Riviera cantilever umbrella is particularly useful around the edges of outdoor spaces, as the canopy can be tilted from a gentle to steep angle. When the sun is rising or sinking behind the umbrella, the tilted canopy will cast a long shadow which can effectively shield multiple tables from low sun. The Riviera cantilever umbrella can also rotate 360 degrees, allowing the canopy to be moved from covering one table to another if required.
Shade7’s Galaxy Quad umbrellas were installed in the centre of the restaurant. Each quad has four canopies, casting a huge ‘roof’ over the space. The fantastic advantage umbrellas have over permanent roofs is that umbrellas can be closed to let the beautiful sunshine in when required. The Galaxy Quad canopies can be individually open or closed, making it very versatile for shared spaces where one table may want shade and others may want sunshine. Gutters are a popular option for the Galaxy. A gutter is a removable canvas channel that runs between two canvases. This is very useful on wet days when rain otherwise might fall between the canopies. The gutters catch the rain , including the runoff from the water-resistant canopies, directing it away from the diners. On sunny days it adds a little extra shade by closing the gap between canopies.
With InterContinental Tahiti keeping both cantilever models in the colour scheme of black and Linen, the overall effect is stylish and harmonious, beautifully complimenting the timber deck and tables, and the natural hues of sea, sky, bush and sand. Every table is sheltered, with the versatile freedom to screen low sun, or close the umbrellas entirely for open sky. The bolted down cantilever style allows plenty of room for foot traffic for diners and servers alike.
