Located on the waterfront of Paihia, 35 Degrees South comes complete with stunning sea views. Taking inspiration from their waterfront position the restaurant exhibits an impressive centrepiece – a 60,000 litre salt water aquarium showcasing a variety of sea life including local fish from the Bay of Islands. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the main food menu is geared towards seafood reflecting their setting once again. Alongside was created to complement this unique indoor restaurant as an outdoor bar focussing on an elegant yet casual social theme. Armed with an extensive beverage list and a bar menu aimed for sharing, Alongside has been adorned with beautiful outdoor lounge and dining furniture to create a relaxing social experience.
Alongside’s owners approached OceanWeave Furniture to supply an assortment of rattan outdoor furniture which would seat around 200 people. All outdoor furniture by OceanWeave has been specially made to sustain warm climates and coastal conditions, making it ideal for this project. OceanWeave supplied Alongside with over 220 pieces of rattan furniture comprising of the Paris Modular Range, Venice Dining furniture and Shell Day Bed. In addition, 8 outdoor umbrellas were supplied by Shade7, who own the OceanWeave Furniture brand. Shade7’s Riviera Cantilever and Bistro Market Umbrellas have been installed to offer sun protection but naturally add another visual dimension to attract onlookers.
The Northland Region where Alongside is located favours moderate temperatures making it an idyllic place for an outdoor bar location. The location of Alongside in Paihia means it has the ability to attract foreigners arriving by cruise ships and also New Zealanders who visit Paihia as a popular holiday destination . The multimillion dollar development of Alongside has been well received by the local community and has been a great success since opening.
In 2018 Alongside changed ownership and is now known as Zane Grey’s.
