The University of Auckland focuses on being an influential university, not only to New Zealand but internationally, in the advancement of teaching, learning, research, creative work and administration. The research-led and internationally recognised University of Auckland is New Zealand’s top university in 37 out of the 40 subjects in the QS World University Rankings by subject 2017. Founded in 1883, the University of Auckland is the country’s largest university with over 40,000 students, of which is largely spread throughout Auckland and neighbouring regions with 8 different campus’.
Being the largest university in New Zealand, there is an increasing need for safe, spacious, fresh, breathable areas for students to relax in during one of the most growing and progressive times in the individuals lives. One of these areas is a courtyard situated outside Faculty of Creative Arts and Industries in a closed off area. The location of this courtyard provides a sheltered area where limited wind can blow through leaving the area without ventilation from the heat of the sun. Throughout the warmer seasons of the year students would be unable to use the facilitated seating area due to the scorching effect that the New Zealand sun provides. With this the University had called on the expertise of Shade7 to assist in creating a comfortable area for students to “recover” from the hours of study undergone or to come.
It was decided that 4 – 5m Octagonal Tempest commercial outdoor umbrellas were the best fit to protect and shade the area. The 5m diameter of the umbrellas makes it the second largest umbrella that Shade7 can provide, covering 17.5m individually. With that said the 4 Tempest commercial outdoor umbrellas can collectively shade an area of 70m2. The Tempest not only provides a large area of coverage from UV rays but the PVC fabric helps protect from the unexpected rain fall that is too common in Auckland. PVC is a welded fabric which allows no rain to seep through, providing a leisure space not only in the warmer seasons but also the rain filled seasons.
Although the area is sheltered on most fronts, there is potential for an unwanted gust of wind to rush through on the north east east as there is a separation between buildings. This is no issue for the Tempest commercial outdoor umbrella. Being manufactured out of aluminium with joint reinforcement, the Tempest has been engineered to withstand winds up to 100km/hr resulting in the model being Shade7 strongest and most durable outdoor umbrella.
Shade7 are proud to have worked with many wonderful New Zealand and overseas organisations including the installation of Tempest commercial umbrellas at Westfield Albany. For any information regarding either of their residential or commercial outdoor umbrellas, please contact them today.
